How to Choose a Non-Toxic Sunscreen That Actually Works
An increasing number of people are using sunscreen daily to protect their skin from harmful UV rays, in part thanks to dermatologists and influencers on TikTok. At the same time, studies suggest that long-term exposure to chemical ingredients in some sunscreens can be toxic.

Sunscreens work differently depending on their ingredients. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV radiation, while mineral sunscreens form a physical barrier that reflects rays away from the skin.

Experts say it's important to apply sunscreen—even as you prepare for a day spent mostly indoors—because UV rays can penetrate windows. Mineral sunscreens tend to be a safer alternative to chemical sunscreens. One rule of thumb this summer: Opt for SPF 30 for everyday use and SPF 50+ for extended time outdoors.
