About.com Health: Now That It's Fall...

From Dawn Stacey, your About.com Health Editor
Fall is upon us. The beautiful season that delights us with amber colored leaves and brisk weather. While I encourage you all to jump in those piles of leaves and enjoy the great outdoors, try not to let take the season's name too literally... that is, remember that falls can happen very quickly and bones can break just as easily.

Why You Need Calcium
Calcium is a mineral found in many foods, and it is important to get enough because your body doesn't produce it. The good news is that there are many options for getting your daily allotment of this essential mineral.

Sticks and Stones...
There are different types of fractures and broken bones, yet these words mean the same thing! The average person living in a developed country can expect to sustain two fractures over the course of their lifetime.

Healing Broken Bones
Unfortunately, broken bones need time to heal... a process that is related to many factors such as your age, overall health, nutrition, blood flow to the bone and treatment.

Bone Up On Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a condition in which your bones become weaker, putting you at greater risk of a fracture or break. You can actually build your bone strength now and prevent Osteoporosis from becoming an issue.

About.com Health: Why Am I Itching?

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Dawn Stacey, your About.com Health Editor
So, I must admit that as I am typing this newsletter and thinking about all the things that can cause us to itch, I can't help but start to feel that nagging sensation -- urging me to scratch. I apologize ahead of time if you start squirming in your seat as you read on.

Evaluate Your Itch
Many things can cause us to itch. One of the first questions you should ask yourself is, where am I itching? Once you have determined the location of your itch, you may be able to figure out what may be causing it.

Conditions that Cause Itching
There can be many conditions that cause the need to scratch. When itching is isolated to a certain area of the body or if you have a rash, it tends to be easier to determine the cause of the itching as well as a treatment.

Other Itchy Causes
Skin itching can make you miserable. In some cases itching may be unavoidable, but there are instances where you may be able to prevent itching altogether.

How to Manage Itchy Skin
When we scratch, we can increase the chance that our skin becomes infected. And, it's okay to admit, most of us are not very good at controlling that urge to itch -- so, what's an itchy person to do?

About.com Health: It's Time to See the Doctor When...

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Dawn Stacey, your About.com Health Editor
I'm the first to admit, going to the doctor is not exactly one of my favorite things to do (and I have a sneaking suspicion that many of you may agree with me). Yet, you know what I find even worse, deciding whether or not I actually need to visit the doctor. I don't want to be "that" patient... you know, the one who calls the doctor for every little symptom, but there are times when making that trip could prove to be extremely beneficial. So, it begs the question -- do you know when it's time to see the doctor?

Early Symptoms
When is a cough something to be taken seriously? Should you wait until you have several symptoms before making an appointment? It seems that certain conditions may provide you with early clues that something may be wrong. When you notice some of these red flags, it may be a good idea to pay the 'ole doctor a visit. You know what they say, the sooner, the better!

Reasons to See a Doctor
It's not that uncommon for us lay people to try to remedy our own problems. We may try to seek relief by using over-the-counter medicines and products or even try to rely on homemade remedies. For certain conditions, these approaches are just fine; but depending on the situation, it may be time to consult a professional with a medical degree.

Finding Dr. Right
Does this scenario sound familiar? You finally decide that it is time to make a doctor's appointment (yay!) -- the only problem, which doctor do you call? There are so many medical specialties, who can help you with your problem?
See More About:  health insurance  health departments

I Can't Get No Satisfaction
When it comes to your health, you should not feel like you are sacrificing. Patient satisfaction is important and can contribute to a stronger doctor/patient relationship. When you feel that you and your doctor are on the same team, you'll be more likely to stick to your treatment plan and feel more comfortable discussing your medical issues. As empowered patients, we should take more responsibility in our medical decisions and become smarter healthcare consumers.

About.com Health: September is Healthy Aging Month

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Dawn Stacey, your About.com Health Editor
Healthy Aging Month is observed every September "because there's lots of living left to do..." This movement was created to bring national attention to the positive aspects of aging. Though growing older is something many of us would rather not happen, Healthy Aging Month reminds us to take this time to celebrate our passion for life. Who knows? You can even use this time to reinvent yourself!

Understanding the Aging Process
When we think about our bodies growing older, most of us point to the more visible changes that we see. Although it is one of the few experiences that all humans have in common, aging is actually one of nature's least understood processes.

Turning 40
So when does one start to become more aware of the aging process? Given that so many people seem to dread the "big 4-0," perhaps this is the age when we begin to realize that we're not getting any younger!

Let's Get Physical
One of the objectives of Healthy Aging Month is to encourage individuals to take personal responsibility for their health. One important way that we can help combat the effects of aging is through exercise. Remaining physically fit can help improve your health, independence, and can offer you a better quality of life as you age.

Aging Challenges
As we age, we may need to pay attention to issues or concerns that may have gone unnoticed in our earlier years. Though older generations encourage us that "the best is yet to come," it may be time to give some consideration to matters other than gray hairs or under-eye wrinkles.
