About.com Health: Taking an Alternative Approach

About.com

From Heather Loeb, your About Health Editor
When conventional medicine doesn't cure what ails them, many folks turn to complementary and alternative medicine. This broad term encompasses several types of therapies, including herbs and supplements, massage, aromatherapy, and mind-body techniques.

A Guilt-Free Reason to Enjoy Chocolate
While the science is still early, some studies show that compounds in chocolate may help boost heart health. I have to thank whoever first decided to study this.

Release Your Tension
Massage therapy can help relieve muscle tension and pain, and is sometimes used as part of treatment for conditions like arthritis, migraines, and circulatory problems.

Supplementing Your Health
Antioxidant supplements are often touted as a natural way to prevent disease and reverse the signs of aging. But are they really worth the money?

Stick It to Pain
I have to admit, I get nervous about needles. But research has found fewer adverse effects with acupuncture than with the drugs often prescribed to treat pain conditions.

About.com Health: Food Allergy Holiday Survival Guide

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Heather Loeb, your About Health Editor
I must admit, one of my favorite things about the holidays is all the delicious treats that are in abundance. For folks with food allergies, however, the holidays can be stressful, as potentially life-threatening allergens seem to lurk on every tabletop.

Allergy-Proofing Your Holiday Meal
It is possible to enjoy the holiday season with food allergies, though. We'll show you how.

Food Allergies in Flight
If you're traveling for the holidays, you'll want to bone up on your airline's policy for people with food allergies. In many cases, you'll need to contact the airline ahead of time to reserve a special meal.

Symptoms of Food Allergies
Sometimes, it can be difficult to tell if you have a food allergy, or if something else is to blame for how you're feeling.

Safety Tips for Kids
You can't always control what foods your child comes in contact with when at school, daycare, or a friend's house. Taking these precautions, though, can help them stay safe.

From Heather Loeb, your About Health Editor
Sure - right about now, I'd love to be relaxing on a hot, sunny beach. But back in reality, I'm shivering my way through a "brisk" Midwestern winter.

Is It Frostbite?
If, like me, your tropical paradise exists only in your mind, you'll want to bundle up tightly to protect against frostbite and other winter health concerns.

Staying Warm on the Run
For committed runners, even freezing temps can't stop them from hitting the road. Keep in mind that winter weather can require special precautions if you're exercising outdoors.

Winterize Your Skincare Routine
The combination of frigid temperatures, wind, and indoor heaters can make for itchy, red skin. You may need to change how you care for your skin.

Improve Indoor Air Quality
Most of us spend the majority of our time indoors during the winter, but indoor air can sometimes be even more polluted than the air outside.
