From Kristin Kane, your About Health Editor
Tomorrow, you may see many people wearing red ribbons in honor of World AIDS Day. Some of you may not need that ribbon to remind you of the impact of the disease, perhaps on you or someone you love. Others may feel far removed from it, thinking of it only as something you hear about on the news.

Basics of Prevention
An estimated 1.1 million people in the United States are living with HIV, 21% of whom are undiagnosed. It's safe to say that many of these people may have also felt, at some time or another, that AIDS was something only others had to worry about - not them.

Who Needs to Be Tested?
Many docs ask their patients if they want an AIDS test, only to hear, "why?" The better question is "why not?" This list, however, outlines the must-do scenarios.

Beyond HIV...
It's important to also remember that sex can put you at risk for other diseases that are more prevalent. Here, the top 10 risk factors for acquiring an STD. It's important to take them seriously - many don't cause initial symptoms and aren't solved with a one-time treatment.

Talking to Kids
Many people who were kids in the nineties became aware of AIDS when Ryan White got loads of media attention. Kids today, however, may have not encountered as widely publicized a case. It's up to you to take the initiative to make sure this important health issue is on their radar.

About.com Health: Darn You, Turkey

From Kristin Kane, your About Health Editor
Yes, I did it. I took a shot at the most prized bird of the dinner table. But that's only because no other foul seems to have such power over me. One sniff of a Thanksgiving dinner, and the next thing you know I'm rubbing my too-full belly while curled up in front of Aunt Barbara and Uncle Tom's fireplace.

5-Star Turkey Rub
This year, though, I'll be helping with Thanksgiving back at home. I'm going to suggest that we season the bird with this mix instead of opting for the traditional butter slathering to make the allure of seconds one that I don't have to worry as much about fighting off.

In the Kitchen:

Triumph Over Turkey Day
Making healthy Thanksgiving meal changes is a plus, of course -- but that doesn't mean that there won't be a few among us who still overdo it. Use these tips so you won't be one of them.

Why the Pilgrims Wished They Had Sneakers
After the last bite inevitably come two questions: Where are my elastic-banded comfy pants, and how am I going to burn this all off? If the latter is a concern for you, use this calculator to figure out just how far you'll need to walk to remove that green bean casserole from your hips.

Benefit from Showing Gratitude
How appreciative we should be for a day on which eating a slice of pie is a sign of showing thanks. Here, though, is a calorie-free way to channel that energy every day throughout the year -- it may even help you become better at adapting to life's stressors, big and small.

From Kristin Kane, your About Health Editor
Dear Smoking Friends:

Let's get the obvious stuff out of the way -- smoking causes very serious health consequences.

You know that. What you may not know is how to quit successfully -- and why you should get serious about it right now.

This Thursday, the Great American Smokeout, is your day to take time out and devise a plan to kick the habit for good. Set yourself up for a success that may just be life-saving.

After the Last Cigarette
It's never too late to quit, and the benefits of putting down those cigarettes for good start to show faster than you may think. Learn how your body responds to quitting in the first few days, over months, and over years.

Take That, Nicotine
As our Guide to Smoking Cessation says, "Recovery from nicotine addiction is a process. It doesn't happen overnight, but it doesn't take forever either." Sign up for our free, 10-day e-course, which will provide you with the information you need to tackle your habit.

Fighting the Good Fight
Of course, there are those not-so-little challenges known as withdrawal symptoms to contend with. Knowing to expect them, and how you can deal with them, can help you triumph.

In Good Company
Take comfort in knowing that plenty of folks can say "been there, done that." Hearing about their quit smoking milestones can inspire you to stay the course.

Diabetes. The magnitude of its effects seems to go underappreciated -- oftentimes by those with the disease, and others by those who think "not me."

Why Diabetes Should Be Taken Seriously
Type 2 diabetes is the type most often being referred to when you hear talk about the disease (the other is type 1) -- and its list of complications is enough to make you drop your doughnut.

The Unlucky 7
Based on this list of factors, Homer Simpson clearly missed his calling as the poster child for type 2 diabetes risk. You may not relate to him, but that doesn't mean the disease may not be in your future. (For instance, check out number five.)

5 Good Reasons to Check Your Blood Sugar
Monitoring blood glucose levels is an extremely important part of diabetes management. If something has to go off your to-do list for the day, believe me, this isn't it.

Eating Right with Diabetes
The old saying "you are what you eat" couldn't be truer when it comes to diabetes. While everyone has personal needs, this How To will help you design a diabetes meal plan that's appropriate for most.
