About.com Health: Why Soccer May Be Bad for Your Health

From Kristin Kane, your About Health Editor
The World Cup has been going on for a bit now, and I've been amazed -- sure, by the athleticism, but more so by those darn vuvuzelas. When asked to give their opinion on them, some said the horns add excitement to the event. But I have to believe there are others so deafened by the sound of these things that they didn't hear the question in the first place.

How to Protect Your Hearing
Sure, ear plugs may not come in your favorite team's colors. But as this video shows, they are still worth your while. They do a good job of protecting you from crazy soccer fan-level crowd noise -- or loud noise from any source, for that matter.

Years and Your Ears
My grandmother was never in the presence of said horn. Age, unfortunately, was what did her hearing in. I'd walk into a room screaming at her, and others would ask why I was so worked up. "Just saying hello," I'd tell them.

Can You Hear Me Now?
Ever have to ask someone to repeat themselves? Or have a hard time hearing others while, say, dining at a restaurant? It may be time for a hearing test. This video walks you through how one's done and what it assesses. Symptom Checkers

A Little Help
There are a variety of hearing aids available today -- some so inconspicuous you (and others) would hardly know they're there. If it's time for an assist, here are some things to consider before you buy yours.

From Kristin Kane, your About Health Editor
In commenting about experiences with bad headaches, one About.com user put it simply: "No one really understands."

Whatever the reason for your discomfort, there's a chance that others looking at you may not think there's anything wrong. If only your nerves could talk...

Living With Chronic Pain
Chronic pain can impact every minute of every day. Visible effects or not, the impact is very real. It takes a multi-pronged approach to go from dealing with it to living with it.

"Oh, My Aching..."
Our joints are pretty amazing -- but they sure can turn on us in the face of inflammation, age or overuse. If you're one of the millions of people with osteoarthritis -- the most common form of arthritis -- these tips are for you. What Else Hurts? Dealing With...

Why Not to 'Just Deal' With a Painful Period
Many women experience pain during menstruation, but this is also the most common symptom of endometriosis. It's important that you speak to your doctor about how you're feeling. If you've already been diagnosed, know your options -- treatments are effective for many.

Will I Become Addicted to My Pain Meds?
One pill becomes two. Two become six. When dealing with relentless pain, all you want is something to finally make it go away. It's crucial that you use your medications as they were prescribed -- and know the risks of taking dosing into your own hands. Exploring Alternatives

About.com Health: For the Guys in Your Life

From Kristin Kane, your About Health Editor
If I give my dad another golf shirt for Father's Day, I'm pretty sure he'll be able to outfit the PGA Tour. Instead, taking inspiration from the fact that it's National Men's Health Week, I'm going to give him something a lot more valuable -- all the support I can to live his healthiest life. 'Good daughter' points and easy on my wallet. Nice.

More Zzzs, Please
Working on his new business late into the night, he needs help making #10 on this list a priority. Come 8 p.m. when I visit this Sunday, I'm standing in front of his computer keyboard as if I am a bouncer.

Refrigerator Redo
My dad has keen kitchen senses -- if it hits the fridge, I give it about 3.5 seconds before it's on his radar. I'm giving that ice box a healthy makeover to make his munching a little easier on his waistline.

Tests He Should Get (Nudge, Nudge)
Go ahead -- call me a buttinski. It's all for good! I want my old man around long enough to enjoy his grandkids...and I know he's been anxiously waiting to see my reaction when one paints the other with cake frosting like I did when I was five. (Sorry again about that.)

Fitness Gifts Under $50
OK. This is all very noble. But sometimes a man just wants a big ole present. Here, some health-promoting gifts for the giving. Yes, this is a hint: Step away from the neck ties.

About.com Health: WHAT's Wrong With You?

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Kristin Kane, your About Health Editor
Diagnosing certain diseases and conditions is so easy for doctors that they could probably do it blindfolded (though I think we'd all agree that's a pretty bad idea). But when it comes to other health problems, physicians would probably pay good money for a one-shot, slam-dunk blood test or telltale symptom. And, allow me to speak for us patients: Yes, please.

Total Exhaustion (and More)
Chronic fatigue -- just the name makes you think of too many late nights in front of the tube. But this mysterious syndrome is, as this article says, much more than just being tired all the time. Its symptom list is as long as a State of the Union Address, and it has serious overlap with several other concerns.

It's IBS...or Is It?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is easily blamed as the cause of diarrhea, constipation, and other assorted -- and not-so-pleasant -- digestive issues. But there are other disorders that could be playing copycat.

The Multiple Faces of MS
Our Guide to Multiple Sclerosis, as not only an expert but an MS sufferer herself, knows firsthand that her disease is a wily one. More than 50 symptoms are linked to it, and each person's experience with it is different.

When You Can't Get a Diagnosis
Yep, your body can be pretty crafty at trying to pull one over on you and the folks in the white coats. But there are other factors that -- if attended to -- could make your situation less of an enigma.
