About

From Maura Corrigan, your About.com Health Editor
The annual U.S. Open Tennis Championships kicked off yesterday in Flushing Meadows, Queens, and whether or not you're a tennis fan, these athletes are mighty inspiring. But the repetitive motions of their sport make them prone to certain injuries that can also afflict us non-elite athletes through everyday wear and tear. Here's a rundown of some of the most common, and what to do if they happen to you.

Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow pain, typically felt on the outside of the elbow, is thought to be caused by small tears of the tendons that attach forearm muscles to the arm bone at the elbow joint. In addition to racquet-sports players, tennis elbow is common in people who work with their hands, such as painters and carpenters. Tennis Elbow, AKA "Lateral Epicondylitis"

How Sprained Ankles Happen
True fact: my worst ankle sprain ever happened while jumping around to The Safety Dance. Spastic dancing aside, sprains are also common in tennis players due to all the bouncing. Ouch! I sprained my ankle!

Calf Muscle Pain, Strains and Pulls
All the running and quick directional changes on the court can cause strains and pulls in tennis players' calf muscles, when muscles are stretched so much that small microtears, or worse--rupture of muscle fibers--occurs. How Calves Get Overstretched

Plantar What? Oh, Plantar Fasciitis
Pain along the bottom of the foot and heel is another common complaint among tennis players, which can occur when the plantar fascia--a thick, fibrous band that supports the arch--is overstretched, resulting in small tears. Plantar Fasciitis Heel Pain

About.com Health: Should You Try a Detox Diet?

If you can't see this email, click here

About

From Maura Corrigan, your About.com Health Editor
The body has its own ways of getting rid of toxins--both those it makes naturally, and the human-made chemicals that we're exposed to in the environment. But some people like to speed along the body's normal process of elimination with a limited-time detox diet. Are these diets really effective, are they safe, and are they right for you?

Just What Is a Detox Diet?
On a typical food-based detox diet, less-healthy fried and processed foods, as well as those containing dairy, wheat, sugar and gluten, are off-limits for a certain period of time while they're replaced with lots of fresh fruits, veggies and other anti-inflammatory edibles. All About the Detox Diet

The 7-Day Detox
A seven-day plan is pretty standard for first-time detox-ers, and while the diet does require that you give up coffee, alcohol and bread (!), you can still feast on delectable avocados, blueberries and green tea. How to Follow a 7-Day Detox

How to Prepare for a Detox
Weaning yourself off caffeine is big in leading up to a detox, but the most important thing before starting any plan is to check with your healthcare professional to make sure detoxing is safe for you. Detox diets are not advised for pregnant women or people with health conditions such as liver disease, diabetes, cancer or kidney disease. How to Get Ready to Detox

The Juice Fast
If you really want to speed up the detoxing process, you could try a juice fast, consuming only water and raw vegetable and fruit juices for one to five days. Personally, I think I'd nibble off all my fingernails on this plan. How to Do a Three-Day Juice Fast

About

From Maura Corrigan, your About.com Health Editor
Any woman who's ever breastfed (and even those around her) knows how difficult it can be: sore nipples, baby won't latch on, not enough milk, etc. So it's important to have some peer support during this time, which is what this year's World Breastfeeding Week is all about. Even if you're loving every breastfeeding moment, some of these tips may help you, too.

Preparing to Breastfeed
One of the best ways to make breastfeeding go smoothly is to do your homework before the baby arrives. A little planning, educating, and support-gathering can go a long way. How To Prepare To Breast Feed
