The recent meat and egg recalls are enough to make you want to smother everything you eat in some food-friendly version of antibacterial gel.

While recalls like this shouldn't be ignored, it's also important to remember that a lot of food-related health issues can start not just in far-off plants, but in our own kitchens.

Proper Egg Safety
This fragile food really does need to be handled with care. Too-high temperatures and even hairline shell fractures can truly dirty a dozen.

Meat and Dairy

Washing Fruits and Veggies
"Wow! Those tomatoes look fresh from the vine!" Yep -- and they could be freshly laced with bacteria, too. (Same goes for bagged veggies.)

Lights Out
When the power goes out, I'm concerned about two things: My DVR not being able to record "Top Chef" and what's going on in my fridge. It can take just two hours for your eats to take a turn for the worse.

Warning: This Will Spoil Your Appetite
Do we really need to fuss this much? The list of 5 Salmonella symptoms in this article shouts a nauseatingly loud message: Yes.

About.com Health: A Shot in the Arm

I'm not sure who hated vaccination time more, my mother or I. I got stuck, sure, but she had to endure my Oscar-worthy doctor's office dramatics.

As Immunization Awareness Month winds down, be sure you know what's recommended for your kids (and you). Then consider having lots of ice cream on standy to make amends for the poking and prodding. Always worked for me.

2010 Childhood Immunization Schedule
Each year, a bunch of docs get together and publish new immunization recommendations for kids and teens. One of the changes this year is actually a win for crying kiddies everywhere.

Total Recall
On the surface, vaccines seem to work like sheer magic. (There's a bit more to it than that.) This video shows just how a shot teaches the body to remember what invaders to fight, and how to fight them, if they ever attack.

Preservatives and Additives in Vaccines
This probably ranks right up there with where to find a Tickle Me Elmo in terms of the most popular parent talk topics of all time. Here, our Guide to Pediatrics delves into some controversial ingredients -- why they're there, and the research behind them.

What Do I Need As an Adult?
Stick me with a needle and I'll turn into a version of my 6-year-old self. Still, I'll be a brave soldier when it comes time for me to get my next recommended shot. And yes, I will treat myself to a vanilla cone afterward...with sprinkles.

From Kristin Kane, your About Health Editor
There are some conversations -- like those about passing gas -- that are best left for the company of only close friends.

Good thing you and I are pals.

Gone With "the Wind"
I say this because many people believe that an urge to constantly "break wind" or belch is something they just have to deal with. Knowing what causes these rumblings can actually arm you with knowledge you can use to help prevent them from happening in the first place. (OK, at least some of them.)

You Are What You Eat
Still, the average person passes some form of gas about 14 times a day. After reading this list of common toot-producing foods, it's no wonder.

Spill It!

Non-Gassy Foods
Big date coming up? How about a job interview? You may want to opt for foods on this list to help ensure that your glowing personality is the only thing that will leave a lasting impression.

Tummy Troubles
Perhaps your gas has coupled up with another symptom, or you are having digestive issues of another nature. Only a doctor can tell you what's going on for sure, but these personalized Symptom Checkers can help you get an idea of what may be going on down there.

Special advice from my friend Eric, an ulcerative colitis sufferer? "Don't wait to find out."

About.com Health: Houston, We Have a Big Problem

About.com

From Kristin Kane, your About Health Editor
A recent report from the CDC -- which states that more than 15% of adults are obese (and that, in 9 states, more than 30% actually fall into this category) -- underscores just how much of a growing problem excessive weight gain is in the United States.

We know -- ignoring extra pounds can be all too easy. The hard part comes when you stop turning a blind eye and decide it's time to take them off.

Hey, We Speak the Truth
No matter what any zippy infomercial may tell you, healthy weight loss takes effort and time. But as you can see from this laundry list of health concerns obese individuals face, it's more than worth your resolve.

Wanna Buy a Bridge?
Of course, it would be nice if those infomercials and weight loss product pushers were right when they promise that you can "lose weight without diet and exercise." It would also be pretty sweet if the Tooth Fairy were real, too.

"Spare Me the Richard Simmons Talk"
You won't find a bigger cheerleader for reaching your healthy weight than me. But, in the interest of not bombarding you with another overly peppy "keep going -- you can do it!" chant, consider sharpening these 5 stay-motivated skills to keep your efforts from derailing.
