From Dawn Stacey, your About.com Health Editor
How did that children's jingle go? "Head, shoulders, knees, and toes... knees and toes..." To be honest, I never put much thought into this song when singing it with my own kids. Yet, now I am beginning to wonder, maybe there may be an important message to be learned.

Head
Let's take a look at our heads - after all, they do hold our brains! But what happens when things inside that head of ours go awry? What if we bump the 'ole noggin? Is a visible bump a sign for concern?

Shoulders
Did you know that our shoulders are actually made up of three bones? The clavicle (collarbone), the scapula (shoulder blade), and the humerus (upper arm bone). Funny how that song doesn't mention this. It also does not instruct us what to do if our shoulders hurt.

Knees
Have you ever stopped to think about how dependent we are on our knees? We use them to squat, to sit, to walk and to run. You may know that the knee connects your thigh and your leg, but did you know that it is also a hinge joint? And, by the way, what the heck even is a hinge joint???

Toes
"This little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed home..." This is what pops into my mind when I hear the word toe. But what really is the function of our toes? We may not think of our toes as being important, yet they are vital to balancing and walking. Plus, many of the problems that affect our toes are actually caused by abnormal foot anatomy. Gee, so much for, "and this little piggy cried wee, wee, wee, all the way home."

About.com

From Dawn Stacey, your About.com Health Editor
Fall is upon us. The beautiful season that delights us with amber colored leaves and brisk weather. While I encourage you all to jump in those piles of leaves and enjoy the great outdoors, try not to let take the season's name too literally... that is, remember that falls can happen very quickly and bones can break just as easily.

Why You Need Calcium
Calcium is a mineral found in many foods, and it is important to get enough because your body doesn't produce it. The good news is that there are many options for getting your daily allotment of this essential mineral.

Sticks and Stones...
There are different types of fractures and broken bones, yet these words mean the same thing! The average person living in a developed country can expect to sustain two fractures over the course of their lifetime.

Healing Broken Bones
Unfortunately, broken bones need time to heal... a process that is related to many factors such as your age, overall health, nutrition, blood flow to the bone and treatment.

Bone Up On Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a condition in which your bones become weaker, putting you at greater risk of a fracture or break. You can actually build your bone strength now and prevent Osteoporosis from becoming an issue.

About.com Health: Why Am I Itching?

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Dawn Stacey, your About.com Health Editor
So, I must admit that as I am typing this newsletter and thinking about all the things that can cause us to itch, I can't help but start to feel that nagging sensation -- urging me to scratch. I apologize ahead of time if you start squirming in your seat as you read on.

Evaluate Your Itch
Many things can cause us to itch. One of the first questions you should ask yourself is, where am I itching? Once you have determined the location of your itch, you may be able to figure out what may be causing it.

Conditions that Cause Itching
There can be many conditions that cause the need to scratch. When itching is isolated to a certain area of the body or if you have a rash, it tends to be easier to determine the cause of the itching as well as a treatment.
See More About:  skin allergies  hives  eczema

Other Itchy Causes
Skin itching can make you miserable. In some cases itching may be unavoidable, but there are instances where you may be able to prevent itching altogether.

How to Manage Itchy Skin
When we scratch, we can increase the chance that our skin becomes infected. And, it's okay to admit, most of us are not very good at controlling that urge to itch -- so, what's an itchy person to do?
