| | From Dawn Stacey, your About.com Health Editor How did that children's jingle go? "Head, shoulders, knees, and toes... knees and toes..." To be honest, I never put much thought into this song when singing it with my own kids. Yet, now I am beginning to wonder, maybe there may be an important message to be learned. | | Head Let's take a look at our heads - after all, they do hold our brains! But what happens when things inside that head of ours go awry? What if we bump the 'ole noggin? Is a visible bump a sign for concern? | Shoulders Did you know that our shoulders are actually made up of three bones? The clavicle (collarbone), the scapula (shoulder blade), and the humerus (upper arm bone). Funny how that song doesn't mention this. It also does not instruct us what to do if our shoulders hurt. | Knees Have you ever stopped to think about how dependent we are on our knees? We use them to squat, to sit, to walk and to run. You may know that the knee connects your thigh and your leg, but did you know that it is also a hinge joint? And, by the way, what the heck even is a hinge joint??? | Toes "This little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed home..." This is what pops into my mind when I hear the word toe. But what really is the function of our toes? We may not think of our toes as being important, yet they are vital to balancing and walking. Plus, many of the problems that affect our toes are actually caused by abnormal foot anatomy. Gee, so much for, "and this little piggy cried wee, wee, wee, all the way home." | | | | Health Ads | | | | Featured Articles | | | | More from About.com | | | | | | Plan a Caribbean Vacation Whether you're planning a romantic escape, a girlfriend getaway, or an active family vacation we've got the resources you need.
