Let's take five minutes to see this week in a new light. | | Setting goals and reflecting on the past are important year-round, but the new year often invites us to really sit down and contemplate our wins, setbacks, and make resolutions for the months ahead. If you're in that headspace, consider some of these research-backed methods for sticking to your goals. | | Setting the right goals, having a plan to reach those goals, and following through on what is required to reach or maintain those goals may help you feel greater happiness and fulfillment." | | We often set goals with the best intentions, but it's easy to fall off the wagon faster than you can say "how much is a gym membership?" The key to success is to lean on research-proven methods of achieving goals. Tap into Your "Why" Intrinsic motivation is essential when setting and achieving a goal. It's one thing to want to read 15 books in a year, but why is that important to you? Why is running a 5K or saving money something you personally want to strive for? Ruminate on that "why" before setting your goal and anytime you experience a setback. Clearly Define The Goal It's nearly impossible to achieve a goal when it's not clearly defined. For example, you could have a goal of "being healthier," but what does that look like when broken down into concrete steps and numbers? Maybe it's "attend three new workout classes this month" or "try a new nutritious recipe once a week." Rely on Social Support Surround yourself with people who uplift, inspire, and cheer you on along your resolutions journey. Maybe it's a specific expert, like a financial coach, trainer, nutritionist, or a relationship coach. Or perhaps it's a group of friends who have similar goals. Our own energy is finite, so having others to lean on to keep us motivated is crucial. Know It's a Journey Achieving a goal isn't a linear path; many hills and valleys occur between setting the goal and achieving it. That said, it is important to recognize that a slump isn't a sign of failure or a reason to give up. Life gets chaotic and wrenches are thrown, but these are unavoidable moments that give us a chance to sit back and recharge. | | Ways to Stay Positive This Week | | Ways to Nurture Your Mind and Body | This week, take 10 minutes to reflect on a goal you set in the past that you were able to achieve. What factors played a role in your success? How might you replicate this success with a new goal? | -
