News: Want to Avoid Zika? Stay More Than a Mile Above Sea Level

The Zika virus is still rampant, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has announced a relatively simple method of avoiding it: stay far above sea level. Until Friday, the CDC was advising pregnant women to keep away from the 37 countries affected by the virus, which are primarily the Americas. But they're now providing more precise guidance. If you travel somewhere at an elevation of higher than 6,652 feet, the altitude and associated temperature is "largely absent" of the mosquitos that are capable of spreading the virus. Countries with the most substantial areas of higher elevation are Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala and particularly Mexico. Brazil, the home of the upcoming Olympic games, does not contain these safe areas.
