About one in four Americans are trying to lose weight right now, but with so many of us overweight – two thirds of us, to be exact – it’s clear that we tend to go about it the wrong way. A new study in the journal Obesity evaluated nearly 200 weight loss programs around the country to determine their effectiveness. The five key areas used during the evaluation – the aspects that every weight loss program needs – came from the weight loss guidelines of the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and The Obesity Society: - Diet Plan
- Behavior Strategies
- Exercise
- Support
- Whether supplements are recommended that aren’t FDA-approved for weight loss. (In other words, if snake oil weight loss pills are used.)
Only nine percent of the programs succeeded in all of these areas. (Those programs weren't named.) And while you might have an idea of how to eat for weight loss – consume fewer calories than you burn – here are our guides to conquering the other four factors. |
