About.com Health: What's Bugging You?

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Heather Watkins, your About.com Health Editor
Even as a grown adult, I still get nervous about bugs. I've gotten better about not screaming my head off every time I see one, though. Instead, I calmly walk over (okay, I run) to my husband and politely ask him to deal with the terrifying creature that's clearly out to get me.

Bee Sting Allergy
Bee stings are one of the most feared aspects of summer (it's not just me, is it?). What scares me, at least, is not so much the pain of the sting itself, but the potential allergic reaction. Dr. Daniel More, our Guide to Allergies, explains what to do should you or someone you know suffer an allergic reaction to a sting. Read more...

Is it a Spider Bite?
In the majority of cases, no. It's very difficult to confirm a spider bite as the cause of a wound, given that lots of toxic bugs cause the same symptoms. There are some signs that might help clue you in, but really, the best bet is to see a doctor. Read more...

Sleep Tight, Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite
My parents used to tell me this when they tucked me into bed as a kid, and I assumed it was just a cutesy rhyme. Turns out it's an all too real thing to worry about, and I've become a bit obsessive about checking hotel room mattresses for signs of these insidious little buggers. Read more...

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Heather Watkins, your About.com Health Editor
I've tried cutting back on my caffeine intake. I'm down to one diet Coke's worth of caffeine at lunch, but trying to cut that out is difficult. Dang you, withdrawal headaches!

Caffeine's Effects on Your Brain
When you start your day off with a cup of java or guzzle a soda at lunch, you might feel as though you're more alert and able to get through the day. But what's actually happening chemically in your brain when it's hit with a jolt of caffeine?

The Safe Amount of Caffeine
Caffeine seems innocuous, but it's not completely harmless. Ever felt jittery after too many Starbucks trips one day?

Can Caffeine Help You Get Through a Workout?
If caffeine can help you stay alert at the office, it only makes sense that it would also help you power through a workout, right? Find out whether taking caffeine before hitting the gym is helpful or harmful.

Caffeine and Fertility
Many women trying to get pregnant wonder whether their caffeine intake is affecting their fertility. But the research isn't very clear.

About.com Health: Keep Your Skin Safe from the Sun

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Heather Watkins, your About Health Editor
If your daily morning routine doesn't already include a healthy dose of SPF, listen up. Applying sunscreen isn't just for a day at the beach or an afternoon spent outside at a festival. The sun's rays can reach you -- and cause damage -- even when you're driving in your car (as evidenced by this guy).

5 Common Sunscreen Mistakes
It should be simple, but the act of properly applying sunscreen is wrought with the potential for mistakes. Don't make them.

Protecting Kids from the Sun
Covering them in sunscreen is a good first step, but there's a lot more you can do to ensure that your child's skin stays protected.

Is Tanning Addicting?
The term "tanorexia" has gotten a lot of media attention in recent years, and some researchers have even looked into it. Turns out that for some people, going tanning can become addictive, thanks to feel-good chemicals that may be produced in the brain.

Okay, so despite all this sage advice, maybe you've found yourself wincing in pain after getting a little too much sun. We've all been there -- here's what to do.
