We know, for example, that Black Americans are more likely to experience poor outcomes from diabetes and heart disease than White Americans. But a new Verywell report explores how, why, and when disparities manifest themselves through the patient experience, not just at the point of diagnosis. The driving force behind these disparities is racism. One in three Black respondents in our survey report having experienced racism while dealing with the healthcare system, and half agreed with the statement "the healthcare system is racist." One reason why may involve lack of representation. Only a quarter of Black Americans in our survey report seeing a provider that shares their race, and only half of Black respondents said they felt that their last provider was familiar with Black patients. The impacts of these sentiments are clear. Black respondents reported less favorable perceptions of doctors, nurses, and physician's assistants than White respondents. They're still going to the doctor and getting annual physicals at the same rate as White respondents, but they're much more likely to delay care or postpone a follow up appointment because of a racist experience. | Know More | Our survey included 1,010 Black Americans and 1,006 White Americans. Quotas were used to ensure national representation for generation, gender, and region within each racial group. | Feel Better | There's not much to feel better about here. But our survey results do contain some hopeful responses. Seventy-five percent of our Gen Z respondents believe there will be a solution to healthcare inequality in their lifetime. | | | Racism against Black Americans has immediate repercussions for their healthcare choices. | | | The 6 Best Humidifiers for Dry Skin | If you feel completely dried out when you wake up in the morning—a common phenomenon in the winter—a humidifier could help. One reason why? A healthy digestive system supports a stronger immune system, which could lead to a better response to treatment. Importantly, patients in the study eating a sufficient amount of fiber (at least 20 grams per day) were getting it through fruit, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains—not through supplements. | | | | In Other News | | ■ | Dr. Paul Farmer, Global Health Giant, Dies at 62.
